Educational Programs for Young Railroaders

Choo Choo Blue Story Time Education Programs

Being naturally curious, children love to explore how things work. They also love to imagine themselves at the helm of powerful steam locomotives, fire trucks, and race cars. Choo Choo Blue story time grabs attention through the stimulation of how we get from here to there. While children love to fantasize about making things go fast, they often need to be reminded to stay safe around trains and other vehicles. Recommended for ages 2-5.

Mini S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math)

The Mini STEAM program caters to the naturally inquisitive learning behaviors of children by teaching through sensory play. This hands-on environmentally driven approach allows children to make a connection with their environment by experiencing it through sensory filters: touch, sight, smell, etc. Learning through play allows children to develop social and emotional growth as they interact with others, cognitive functions as they solve problems based on their environment and motor skills as they interact with their environment.

Recommended for ages 2-5.

Brain Train

The Brain Train is an educational brand of early education curriculum developed by the B&O Railroad Museum. This program teaches S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) topics through a number of learning opportunities from hands-on activities to guided programs and at home STEAM challenges.

  • Brain Train Station features a functioning steam engine interior called the Running Gear. This massive machine on exhibit in the B&O Railroad Museum's North Car Shop allows kids to observe the inner workings of a locomotive.
  • STEAM Work Benches provide kids with railroading challenges that help them practice and develop math, science, and technology skills.
  • LEGO Workshops provide a fun hands-on learning experience in which children use their imaginations and thinking powers to overcome building challenges.
  • Railroading Day "Calling All Scouts!" - The B&O Railroad Museum partners with the Boy Scouts of America to provide scouts the opportunity to celebrate railroading by spending the night in the museum. The following day, scouts may meet merit badge requirements toward Railroading, Inventing, & Electronics and partake in special hands-on activities that are age appropriate for cub scouts and boy scouts.

Recommended for ages 6-12.
