Learn how a telegraph works and the similarities to the modern internet. Discover how distant leaders stayed in touch with commanders on the battlefield. Try your hand sending Morse code too!

The Role of U.S. Colored Troops in the Civil War

Members of the 23rd Regiment USCT will be on hand to explain the engagement of African Americans in the Civil War. July 30th is the anniversary date of the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, VA. We will recognize Decatur Dorsey, a native of Howard County who served in the United States Colored Troops, fought at the Battle of Crater and received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Information on other Howard County citizens who served in the USCT will also be presented.

All Aboard Summer Reading Program, “I’ve Been Readin’ on the Railroad”
June 20 - August 22
A magical experience that takes children on a trip and teaches them new things about people and places! Children who participate in “I've Been Readin' on the Railroad” Summer Reading Program at the B & O Railroad Museum and Ellicott City Station earn a free book and a chance to win an engineer's outfit.  It's easy and the trip down the tracks are fun and educational.  Let the magic of reading and the railroad take you and your child on a special journey. Pick up a reading journal at the B & O Railroad Museum or the Ellicott City Station, browse the children's railroad books and begin your journey!  Read 10 railroad-related books, complete your journal, and return it to either Museum by August 22, 2016 for your free book and a chance to win an engineer's outfit!

The B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Ellicott City Station, Mount Clare Museum House are proud to partner with Blue Star Museums and offer active military personnel and up to five family members free admission to the museum through Sunday, September 4, 2016. The Geneva Convention common access card (CAC) a DD Form 1173 ID card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card are required to receive free admittance.
