MAY 2014 at Ellicott City Station

Civil War 150th Anniversary
The War Came By Train
Now – May 30, 2015
Wednesday – Sunday
11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Ellicott City Station, America’s oldest railroad station, hosts a satellite exhibit of The War Came by Train that presents living history demonstrations and exhibits highlighting the effect of the railroad during the Civil War on small town life, residents and troops that came through. The focus of 2014's exhibit highlights the role of the B&O and Ellicott's Mills during the Battle of Monocacy, the battle that saved Washington. Learn how the town was inundated by retreating forces and the ensuing chaos created during the retreat from the Monocacy battlefield near Frederick, Maryland in July of 1864.

Meet Billy Yank
Saturday, May 17
12 Noon & 2:00 p.m
Ellicott Mills was a hotbed of wartime activity with soldiers camped on the heights surrounding the town to provide protection and its own provost marshal's office to recruit new soldiers for the Union cause. Children ages 8 and older may be "enlisted" into the Union Army and learn the basic drills a raw recruit, with a hands-on explanation of the equipment an infantryman would carry. Also, join staff and see how Union soldiers were trained to load and fire a Civil War era rifled muskets. No reservations required to participate.
