Boxcar No.88958 was built for the Pere Marquette Railway in 1927 by the Pressed Steel Car Company. The No.88958 had an all-steel under frame and an extra large door, making it capable of carrying long items, such as automobiles. It had a carrying capacity of 80,000 pounds. The No.88958 was acquired by the C&O Railway when the Pere Marquette merged into the C&O in 1947. After this boxcar worked most of its career in revenue service, the C&O placed the No.88958 on its maintenance of way roster. When the No.88958 was moved to maintenance of way service, it was renumbered as the No.SB-331.
In 1980, after 55 years on the rails the No. SB-331 retired to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum. The Museum repainted the No.SB-331 to its original Pere Marquette paint scheme and renumbered it in the original number series for these boxcars.
