  • Garrett County Historical Society and Museum

    The Garrett County Historical Society Museum (established in 1969 and relocated into downtown Oakland in 1997) consists of eight large theme rooms that capture the essence of a time when this wilderness mountaintop was transformed into a bustling locale of commerce, industry and a surprisingly elegant Victorian vacation paradise. Admission is free and the museum hours are 10-3pm, Monday through Saturday, May through December. January through April the museum is open 10-3pm Thursday through Saturday. The Grantsville Community Museum in Grantsville (open Friday and Saturday from May through October) is a branch of the GCHS and is recommended for a visit. It features northern Garrett County historical artifacts, Braddock Road/National Pike exhibits and an amazing Leo Beachy photographic exhibit.

    Housed in a restored 1911 B&O train station, the Grafton B&O Railroad Heritage Center hosts educational exhibits and events, a model train exhibit, book signings, and numerous guest speakers and traveling exhibits. All activities hosted by the Grafton B&O Railroad Heritage Center feature multiple educational components that are geared to all age levels.

    The Town of Rowlesburg plays an active role in the development of visitor attractions through the Tourism Commission, which works closely with the Rowlesburg Area Historical Society to sponsor grant applications, programs and exhibits. Among the attractions that bring visitors to Rowlesburg is the Depot Museum. The Depot Museum is a former B&O railroad freight and passenger station, which now houses hundreds of artifacts ranging from switch tools to uniforms, a fully restored 1927 caboose, and an 1847 Howitzer replica. In addition to the Depot Museum, the Town of Rowlesburg is also home to the History and Genealogical Museum and the Cannon Hill Battle Site.
