Dear Friends of the B&O Railroad Museum:
While the Museum remains closed during building reconstruction, restoration efforts continue for other pieces of the collection. Through funding provided by the North American Railway Foundation, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway No. 409 combine car was sent to Strasburg, Pennsylvania this week for restoration. The No. 409 has been on the Museum's "Most Endangered List" for five years.
Built in 1900 by the Pullman Company for the Hocking Valley Railway, the No. 409 combine was mainly used for less crowded rural routes that did not require separate full size passenger and baggage cars. Offering a fresh interpretation to B&O Railroad Museum visitors, this car will interpret passenger service, rural train service, as well as the sordid history of Jim Crow cars and segregation on the railroad. Upon reopening, it will be on display in the Roundhouse.
Thank you for your continued support as The B&O Railroad Museum remains closed until further notice.
