Title: Copywriter/Content Writer

Reports To: Senior Director of Marketing

Summary: The Copywriter/Content Writer is responsible for the Museum’s tone and voice through social media, web, advertising, and visitor experience.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with marketing team to draft compelling narratives that can be converted into creative executions across various platforms: 
  • Content includes website, email, social media campaigns, advertising copy for digital (search, social, display, etc.) and traditional mediums (print, OOH, etc.), marketing emails, on-site collateral (both print and digital), and direct mail. 
  • Work with teams across the museum to produce content, including the Curatorial department to produce compelling copy for the visitor experience and exhibitions.  
  • Participate in project kick-offs and status meetings to stay aligned with the creative process and ensure adherence to timelines. 
  • Should be a highly conceptual, collaborative, problem solver and dedicated to creating excellent and cohesive work. 
  • Genuine interest in the Museum and history preferred. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or writing-related field. 
  • 3-4 years of marketing/communications related experience. 
  • Fast, flexible, and fluid writer, with a capacity to dive into new subjects and get up-to-speed quickly. 
  • Conceptual thinker with experience in a wide array of media including digital, email, social media, print, direct response, and video. 
  • Ability to perform excellent social care responding promptly to inquiries, etc.; additionally, candidate should be prepared to create daily (multiple) posts and to adapt to new information quickly. 
  • Experienced at translating a creative brief into clear and motivating creative. 
  • Ability to convey complex histories and information in a concise and compelling manner. 
  • Excellent research, reporting, writing, and editing skills, including the ability to synthesize input from multiple stakeholders. 
  • Proactive, organized, and detail oriented. 
  • Open and collaborative with all stakeholders; adept at forming new partnerships. 
  • Experience working on a range of digital content platforms and familiarity with digital content workflows. 
  • Knowledgeable in SEO best practices. 
  • Preferred working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and social media interfaces (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, WordPress). 
  • Candidate should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends when the Museum is holding special events. 

The B&O Railroad Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of American railroading and its impact on American society, culture, and economics. In 2021, the B&O Railroad Museum announced its official designation by the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom Underground Railroad Site and is actively preparing for the B&O’s 200th anniversary in 2027. The Museum is in a ‘build’ mode and seeks a candidate who is excited to scale the Museum’s social presence and market its initiatives effectively for further reach.
