Some common questions about Sensory Inclusive & Neurodivergency
People who identify as Neurodivergent may have a variety of disabilities that impact how they process the world around them. Neurodivergence can refer to challenges related to communication, sensory processing, mood, mental health, etc. Keep in mind Neurodivergence is about processing challenges not behavior.
Sensory inclusive events are designed to anticipate the needs of disabled and Neurodivergent participants in order to fully support them. These events do not exclude those without disabilities, instead they foster inclusion and acceptance of differences. For our Sensory Inclusive trick-or-treat we will provide allergy safe candy (disabled kiddos often struggle with more allergies), limit sensory triggers (which include bright lights and sudden noises), and provide a contained and safe environment (for our friends who have elopement behaviors). These are just a few examples of how events can be structured around support needs, the goal is to build in supports rather than tacking them on afterwards when the need inevitably arises.
