From Biscuits to Freedom Cake: The Culinary Journey of Henry “Box” Brown

As part of monthly programming for our new exhibition, The Underground Railroad: Freedom Seekers on the B&O Railroad, 19th Century food and beverage historian, Nancy Siegel, will be leading a discussion and food tasting centered on the food that Henry “Box” Brown ate prior to, during, and after his journey on the Underground Railroad. Join us at the B&O Railroad Museum for this culinary experience on Saturday, October 22, from 1–3 PM.

Anthony Cohen embarked on a two-month journey from Maryland to Canada in the spring of 1996 retracing the Underground Railroad, using Henry “Box” Brown’s method of shipping himself in a crate.
