B&O Unlocked: No. CE-15 Tunnel Clearance Car

The wait is over! It’s time for the first B&O Unlocked piece of 2025!

Believed to be the world’s only surviving tunnel clearance car, the B&O No. CE-15 Tunnel Clearance Car marks a pivotal time of innovation and civil engineering. During the 20^th century, the size of locomotives and freight cars increased and so arose a need to measure the sizes of bridges and tunnels.

The CE-15 was the only clearance car constructed by the B&O and was created by placing the body of a caboose on a flat car and adding 67 quills. Quills on this car would allow crew to measure the size of the tunnel by flexing against pressure.

Small children must be accompanied by an adult guardian at all times.
