Interested in volunteering but not able to make a long-term commitment? We still need you!

The B&O Railroad Museum hosts a handful of fun events throughout the year that attract many visitors. These events are perfect for volunteering with a friend, a child/grandchild (14+ with a parent/guardian), as a group, or to knock out those remaining community service hours before graduation.

Volunteer assignments for each event vary, but may include:

  • Greeting and checking in guests
  • Running the kids craft & activities tables
  • Facilitating kid activities (yard games, moon bounce, etc.)
  • Helping direct special photo lines for pictures with the likes of Thomas the Train, Sir Topham Hatt, Santa Claus, and more
  • Helping guests board and exit trains
  • Assisting guests at the information desk

If you’d like to receive information about special events to volunteer at, you can join the volunteer email list here or check back for a sign-up link before the next event.

The Polar Express

Do you love the holidays and all things festive? Would you like to be a part of the B&O Railroad Museum’s annual family event, The Polar Express? We are looking for volunteers!

About the event: The Polar Express is a super fun and festive family event based on the Warner Brother’s popular animated children’s movie, The Polar Express™. It takes place over the last weekend of November and the first three weekends in December. The event includes multiple live performances of scenes from The Polar Express™, a magical holiday train ride, a trip to the “North Pole” in the Museum’s historic Roundhouse, and beloved characters from the movie such as the Hobo and Hero Boy.

What do volunteers do? Volunteers for this event help make it all happen – from the cozy and exciting holiday atmosphere to the warm and friendly visitor assistance. Volunteer roles include greeting guests, assisting with the train boarding, operating the lights for the live performance (just a switch, nothing fancy!) and the snow machine, helping with the kids’ holiday craft table, and more. Volunteers are thanked with a pair of general admission museum tickets. Beverages and light snacks are also available during each of the shorter day shifts. On full operating days, volunteers are provided a meal.

The Museum is looking for morning, afternoon, or whole day shifts on the following dates:

  • Friday, November 25
  • Saturday, November 26
  • Sunday, November 27
  • Friday, December 2
  • Saturday, December 3

  • Saturday, December 10
