Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Employee Records:

Employee Record

The Hays T. Watkins Research Library contains records that may be of interest to family members doing genealogical research for specific individuals who worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Due to the nature and format of these records, seekers must request a search, which will then be conducted by library staff.
 
What We Have:
 
The collection consists of many thousands of individual employee records which were microfilmed by the Railroad during the late 1960s and early 1970s in the B&O’s Baltimore office.
 
What We Do Not Have:
 
The B&O Employee Records collection contains the records of most, but not all, Baltimore & Ohio Railroad employees between 1905 and 1971. It does not contain records of every employee who worked for the B&O during this time period – just those whose cards were in the Baltimore office and were not lost or destroyed.
 
Records of employees prior to 1905 were burned when the Railroad headquarters building was destroyed in the Baltimore Fire of 1904. Records after 1971 are the property of CSX Transportation, successor to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and are not available to the public.
 
What the Records Contain:
 
The records rarely contain personal information, i.e. information on spouses, children, parents, or home addresses. Most are job records only. Generally, but not always, the records give the individual’s name, date of birth, job title, division, department, station, salary, and subsequent changes in the job or salary including date of retirement, resignation or dismissal, and in some instances, date of death.
 

Fees
 
The Employee Record Search fee includes a search of all pertinent databases for one individual B&O employee. If a record is found, copies of the information contained therein will be provided to the requester via email or paper copy. Fees must be paid prior to the initiation of your record search. Due to the number of research requests, please allow four to six weeks to process your results.
 
Museum Members Fee: $35 per individual
Non-Members Fee: $50 per individual
 
Please Note: Those who submit an employee records search request are paying for archives staff to conduct research, not for any results that the search may or may not yield.
 
How To Request a Record For Your Relative:
 
To submit a request for an employee record, please first complete this online form: Employee Records Search Request Form.
      
If you are unable to complete the online form, please print and fill out this form and mail it to the Hays T. Watkins Library and Archives at 901 W. Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21223 or fax it to 410-752-2499. The preferred method of submission is the online form.
