While standard switcher locomotives are designed to move slowly around rail yards, “road switchers” are multi-purpose engines made to travel as fast as mainline locomotives. The WM No. 195 was one of these locomotives purchased by the Western Maryland Railroad in the mid-20th century, as the railroad was phasing out the last of its steam locomotives.

For over two decades, the road switcher was used to pull heavy coal trains through West Virginia’s Blackwater Canyon. By 1979, the road switcher had been cosmetically restored and delivered to the B&O Railroad Museum. In all that time, the reliable engine never suffered a mechanical or electrical failure.

This was such an awesome experience! The trains inside were phenomenal and all very well kept. But we went ahead and did the train ride also and that was just icing on the cake! This is a great experience for kids, teens, and adults like myself.
