Are you eager to volunteer with the Museum AND want to become a certified train conductor?
Volunteer Train Conductors are critical to the operation of the Mile One Express maintenance and train rides. Conductors help operate the train and ensure the safety of the passengers by responding to any emergencies and incidents that take place during the ride and by adhering to rail safety policies and procedures while operating the train. Conductors also help maintain the engines, passenger cars, tracks, etc. To become a Volunteer Conductor, applicants must successfully complete a minimum of 80 hours of training including classroom and ride along/on the job training, and must pass a rules and safety exam, among other competency assessments.
Due to the extensive training involved, a minimum commitment of 2 train rides/month is required of volunteers after the completion of training.
Requirements for becoming a Volunteer Train Conductor:
- Ability to learn rules and meticulously follow safety procedures and protocol.
- Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work outdoors and on your feet for extended periods of time.
- Ability to easily lift 80 lbs coupler knuckle and carry it 20 ft.
- Availability and ability to attend all training classes, ride alongs, and fulfill training requirements with 4 months of start date.
- Ability to conduct 2 days/month for 1 year (to complete training and maintain skills).
- Conductors should be in good physical healthy and have good hearing and eyesight. Conductors must be able to do tasks that involve, but are not limited to, squatting, climbing, lifting, and other similar activities.
- Conductors should have good interpersonal skills for working with staff, fellow volunteers, and the public.
