Gear up for back to school with the B&O!

From August 22 through August 26, we’ll be offering various workshops and tours for kids to explore and learn before heading back to school this fall. See more from the week’s schedule below.

Note: all workshops are one hour and tours are 30 minutes.


Maryland History Workshop

Monday, August 22 at 11 AM
Students will learn about the invention of the telegraph and recreate the device to practice Morse code communication. Workshop duration is 1 hour.

African American Railroading Legacy Workshop

Wednesday, August 24 at 1 PM
Students will learn about the B&O’s role in the Underground Railroad and explore printmaking with historic symbols.

Environmental Impact Junior Tour

Thursday, August 25 at 10:30 AM  
Students will learn about the railroad’s impact on our environment and discover how the industry has changed to promote eco-friendly travel.

PVC Freight Challenge Workshop

Friday, August 26 at 1 PM  
Students will use their STEM knowledge to create a working freight car out of the provided materials.

The roundhouse was my favorite part, because it gives a true feel for what goes on in a roundhouse—the cars are stationary, but seeing the actual tracks is eye-opening.
