Freedom in Fabric: The Legacy of African American Quilting
African American quilting traditions- rooted in storytelling, artistry, and community- continue the legacy of the pursuit of freedom from the Underground Railroad to this day.
Discover the artistry and community traditions of African American quilting in Baltimore and take part in a conversation about the cultural memory of “quilt codes” on the Underground Railroad. While its historical origins remain debated, quilting regardless is a story rich in meaning and expressions of freedom in today’s African American communities.
Event Schedule
January 17 & 18:
10 am – 4 pm Roundhouse Craft: Our Museum will be hosting mini-quilt crafts for kids. Children can create their own symbols and images of freedom by working with felt and glue to create their own quilt square to take home.
10 am – 12 pm Guided Program Experience. As guests explore our Underground Railroad exhibit, folks can learn more in depth about the legacy quilting has had on African American communities in Baltimore and beyond as symbols of freedom and empowerment.
11 am & 1 pm African American Railroading Legacy: For each day at 11 am and 1 pm, enjoy tours of our African American Railroading Legacy.
January 19:

11:30 Presentation: The Uhuru Quilters Guild Founder, Carol Williams, will provide a talk on the African American Quilting Legacy.
