As we enter March, visitors of the B&O Railroad Museum can enter the SEH No. 4 “St. Elizabeth” for a limited time.
The SEH No. 4 — known affectionately as the “St. Elizabeth” or “Little Lizzie” — was one of the last steam locomotives ever produced in the United States. The St. Elizabeth No. 4 is an example of an 0-4-0 saddle tank, switch locomotive. Switcher engines were used in areas with severe curvatures, such as within the property of an industrial complex. This switcher was used to pull coal hoppers from a B&O rail connection into the grounds of St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington D.C. where the coal was used for heating. When the hospital switched to using oil for heating and no longer needed a locomotive, the St. Elizabeth was transferred to the U.S Army at FT Eustis VA where it was used for training purposes and renumbered to USA No. 714.
Don’t miss your chance to climb aboard the St. Lizzie in March while its unlocked and experience this piece of history while you can.
