Called a dynamometer, the C&O No. DM1 was originally built in 1929 with instruments provided by Baldwin Locomotive Works as both a diagnostic device for recording train and locomotive performance and as living quarters for crew members. The entirety of the recording device is displayed alongside a video presentation that details the complexities of operating such a large piece of equipment, and explains the necessity of monitoring and recording train performance data across a variety of geographies. Moving deeper into the train car reveals the stark contrast between passenger and employee travel on the railroads by showcasing the tight quarters where crew members spent their time when not operating the dynamometer, and the small galley in which they would have prepared and cooked their meals during their long work trips.
